There has been a longstanding tradition of furniture making in Mexico since post-Colonial times. While in urban areas, the craft guilds were focused on producing more ornate Spanish-style pieces, rural guilds were less regulated, and were therefore free to produce a more rustic (and functional) variation of furniture styles, which better suited daily life in the country.

We adore these handcrafted “toy” furniture pieces constructed from rustic pine + palm leaf (air plant for scale!). Made by a Zapotec artisan we met in Oaxaca City, they’re a beautiful example of the kind of craftsmanship that has slowly been fading since the mid 20th century. DIMENSIONS:  7 1/2" tall. Due to the handmade nature of these pieces, each varies just slightly in dimensions.
